On the 16th of March our blog post “Why Ireland is the best place in the world for a start-up” reached page 1 of Hacker News. To many people this might not mean much, but to us it was a fulfilment of a long held ambition. We peaked at number 5 on page 1 and we were there for around an hour.
Eoin used Dingadeal to book his group of 21 that travelled to Cork for a stag party. They got bids from 4 hotels all of which included at least 2 extras. There is a side of Ireland that is being largely ignored by the media and is very much fighting back. Entrepreneurship is on the rise, new businesses are shooting up and there is a community of small businesses both online and offline.
Since we started out last January there is one question we have been asked over and over again. Where did the name Dingadeal come from? We have heard from people who love the name and from people who aren’t so keen. Some have asked us whether it’s because we are all from Dingle and others [...]
Trying to organise a group’s stay in a hotel can be as frustrating for you (the hotelier) as it is for the group organiser. There are numerous challenges you face when working with groups. After nearly 12 months of research, planning, development and numerous changes of direction we are ready to put Dingadeal.com live. We set out on this journey in January and have come a long way since. What started out as a fairly casual meeting on a January evening has developed into a fully fledged business with numerous ups and downs along the way.

You pick a destination; you book the transport and then have to start thinking about the hotel. Finding the right hotel is usually where things start to get complicated. If you are like the rest of us you will take the following steps.
Over the last few years we have seen Ireland reduced from a tiger economy and a beacon of hope for smaller developing nations to a case study of mismanagement and one of the most high profile victims of a property bubble. Since the subprime mortgage bubble burst, Ireland has seen unprecedented unemployment rates and a new era of brain drain with highly qualified graduates departing the shores. How true the statistics are I don’t know, but I’ll put them here for effect. Apparently 110 people are leaving Ireland on a daily basis looking for a better life elsewhere.
